REVIEWS/PREVIEWS/INTERVIEW
Squanto show, November 22nd, at MINT Gallery
Well it happened, as predicted, and was fun enough to justify the enormous “FUN” tag painted on the wall. My favorite part was the trippy blacklight corner filled with tie-dyed pillows. Also, the music was awesome.
review: 4 out of 5 feathers, minus one because feathers were not provided for guests, although jewel stickers and corn husks were readily available.

Beep Beep Gallery, November 28th
As Jason mentioned in our previous post, it was the last night to see “Majestic Hours” by Sam Parker and Joe Tsambiras. The show is, in my opinion, amazing, intricate, gritty, and beautiful, and if you did or did not see it, you will still have the chance to see work by these artists VERY SOON at an event that i will tell you about IN THIS POST…(hold yr horses!!! do not scroll!!!). The show was given an epic sendoff by Judi Chicago, whom i am now crushin on big time. It was definitely the “intimate performance” that was promised…even featuring a cameo by NUDITY (sort of) when they stripped down to put on those zany marching band uniforms. But this is not http://cuteboysmakemenervous.blogspot.com, and right now the rest of the Art Relish guys are wondering why they let a dumb girl join the team. UHH…BACK TO BUSINESS…
review: 5 out of 5 bones, an homage to: skeleton-like imagery in “Majestic Hours”, Judi Chicago’s song about bones (what is it called? i want it), as well as the major bone that everyone now has for Beep Beep/Sam Parker/Joe Tsambiras/Judi Chicago post-performance.
Anyway, I have just received word, many words, in the form of a press release, about a new show opening this Thursday, December 4th at Wonderroot:
WonderRoot and ThoughtMarker present, Art and Music Curated by ThoughtMarker: A Two Years of Existence Celebration
Opening Reception: Thursday, December 4th 7p-9p at WonderRoot (FREE)
Music Performances: Thursday, December 4th 9:30p- ($5)
Art remains on display at WonderRoot throughout December. For the past two years, ThoughtMarker has helped to promote and document local artists, exhibits, and galleries across Atlanta that fly underneath the mainstream radar. To celebrate ThoughtMarker’s second year of existence, I’ve selected work from some of my favorite artists and shows of the past year to exhibit together at WonderRoot this December.
This work was shown over the past year in alternative spaces and galleries including Youngblood Gallery, Beep Beep Gallery, Aurora Coffee, MINT Gallery, Eyedrum, Foundation One Gallery, and more. Artists include Lindsay Appel, Steven Dixey, Evereman, Sunni Johnson, Dosa Kim, Michi, Sam Parker, Shaun Thurston, Jason Travis, Joe Tsambiras, and Jenny Young.
An opening reception will take place on December 4th at 7pm. I’ve also booked bands to play in WonderRoots performance space that evening starting around 9: Olympus Mans, Sealions, Era of the Stereograph.
Thanks to WonderRoot for hosting this event and to Haveyouheard.net for their help with band booking logistics.
WonderRoot is located at 982 MEMORIAL DR SE ATLANTA, GA 30316
End press release. Keep reading for an interview with Mike Germon of ThoughtMarker.
ThoughtMarker was started by Mike Germon, artist, gallery manager of MINT, designer (working under the name Three Blind Mikes), and all-around busy kind of guy. The idea for ThoughtMarker developed in 2006 when Germon realized that “the art scene in Atlanta was more than just a bunch of galleries in Buckhead serving champagne to people wearing shiny shirts.” Germon hoped to promote a greater local recognition of the street, lowbrow, and DIY art that inspires him, and two years later, he is actively doing just that. The show opening on Thursday is a collection of art handpicked by Germon as his favorites from the past two years- no small honor, considering the number of shows that Germon has attended throughout this period. The unifying theme of the work in question is simply “the fact that I like it and would like to present it to an audience that perhaps didn’t see it the first time,” Germon says. For those of you who would rather not wade through any bullshit, Germon has already done the hard part, compiling a sweet mix tape for all of Atlanta and dropping it off at Wonderroot, an equally sweet little venue that has been growing steadily since 2004 and as a gallery, performance space, and recording studio. I decided to take a hard-hitting angle with this breaking investigation and ask Germon some questions myself. Here are his answers!!!
1. Mike, will any of the art be for sale? Can I afford it?
Yes and maybe. I imagine that the majority of the art in the show will be for sale, and while you may not be able to afford all of it, I can promise you that the art will be well worth what it is priced, both because none of the artists are big players in the mainstream art world and because there isn’t the usual cut going to a gallery.
2. Ha. You obviously don’t realize that I am super extremely rich. Why should I go to this show instead of seeing Twilight? again?
Because I can promise the same amount of excitement can be found in a single painting by Steven Dixey, in which there will be at least 3.
3. Will you give a speech at the show and/or will you reveal your lovely face?
There will be no speeches. I will be there for sure and my face is only a secret to the uninformed.
4. Does ThoughtMarker have t-shirts for sale, because I noticed yours and I thought it was pretty cool.
Last year I had four different local art entities design ThoughtMarker shirts that I proceeded to give away. I still have a couple of the MINT/TM, the Metatronic/TM, and the Epidemik Coalition/TM shirts. The Steven Dixey shirts are highly sought after and very rare and I only have my own left over. The others will be given away at the show on Thursday.
So there you have it. You might get a free t-shirt. As a side note, I heard the Sealions play at MINT at the November 15th show and was really impressed. With all of this good art and good music concentrated into one small space, the show will be pretty intimate, perhaps even moreso than the Judi Chicago show- which means PREPARE TO FALL IN LOVE with some art/artists/music/musicians/audience members. Just in time for the holidays!!! Adorable.
